Interferon Alpha Has Strong Anti-tumor Effect in Philadelphia-Negative Myeloproliferative Neoplasms

In an effort to explore an alternative to hydroxyurea (HU), which can have a leukemogenic effect, this study analyzed patients with Philadelphia chromosome-negative MPNs receiving HU versus those receiving interferon (IFN)-alpha, demonstrating a 97% hematologic response and 60% complete hematologic response in the IFN-alpha group, compared with 78% and 56% in the HU group, respectively, at a 121-month median follow-up.
